This is where Joseph Naper planted the seeds of what would become one of the most vibrant communities in the nation. In 1831, Joseph Naper, his family, and a handful of settlers embarked on a daring journey. Aboard the schooner The Telegraph, they navigated the unpredictable waters of the Great Lakes, braving storms and icy winds. Their destination? A patch of wild land along the DuPage River. For Joseph, this wasn’t just a place to settle, it was the foundation of a vision.
Upon arriving, the Naper family wasted no time. They built a mill, a trading post, and a log cabin that would serve as both a home and a refuge for travelers. Life was harsh, with brutal winters and the ever-present challenges of the frontier. Kroehler Manufacturing, a furniture company founded in Naperville, became one of the largest employers in the region.
