Welcome, fellow bug enthusiasts, to downtown Naperville, which is buzzing not only with cicadas, but with some very colorful and creative painted bug sculptures. I’m Eric with Andersen Realty Group, and this year’s sculpture display features four different types of bugs: honeybees, ladybugs, caterpillars, and snails. In past years, the sculptures have featured such themes as book benches, trains, and golf ball chairs.
First up, let’s visit the bees. These sculptures are a tribute to our tiny friends who keep the world blooming. And don’t be surprised if you see a bee or two on next season’s “So You Think You Can Dance.” Bees literally dance all day long. We communicate with words; bees communicate through a series of dance moves. Move over, Fred Astaire and Kevin Bacon.
Next up, the ladybugs. These little garden warriors are more than just a pretty face; they’re also natural pest controllers. You see an aphid, they see candy. In some cultures, ladybugs are seen as symbols of good luck, so make sure to give them a little wave as you stroll by.
And here we have the caterpillars. These whimsical creatures show us the beauty of transformation. One of the local artists, Marianne Lisson Kuhn, included some fun and creative elements in her work this year. One of her paintings shows two caterpillars having a tea party under a mushroom, and another is reading “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.”
And don’t forget the snails, sliding into the spotlight with their colorful shells. These humble mollusks are nature’s cleanup crew, recycling organic matter and keeping the ecosystem in balance. They might not have sweet dance moves like the bees, but their work is no less important.
In all, this year’s display features eighteen different sculptures. They are sponsored by local businesses, and two of them were painted by art students from Naperville Central and Metea Valley High Schools. You can find a map of all their locations on the Downtown Naperville Alliance website.
