Are you looking for something fun to do with the family this holiday season? In this video, we’ll have a look at several downtown light displays here in Chicago’s western suburbs. I’m Eric with Eric Andersen Homes, and while you’re enjoying the festive scenery, don’t forget to support the local businesses and restaurants. You never know, you may find some new favorites, and I’ll be sure to share some of mine along the way.
First up, Westmont. Enjoy decorated storefronts and light displays in their downtown. Especially be sure not to miss the impressive tree they have as part of their light display. Westmont also has events like Hollydays to add to your calendar to enjoy with family and friends during the holiday season.
Moving on, I’d also recommend you check out the lights and display at the Oak Brook Mall. This is a great option for you multi-tankers out there. You can take in some beautiful decorations as you shop, dine, or enjoy a coffee from one of our new favorites, Beatrix. I was impressed by the white lights in the heart of the mall and the two imposing reindeer. Those things are massive! The one day my wife and I were passing by and saw them—they have to be 20 feet tall—and she said it reminded her of those “Night at the Museum” movies where the people and animals on display come to life. She was little worried these things were going to animate and start chasing us around the mall.
Downers Grove is a favorite in my family for its festive lights, restaurants such as Pierce’s Tavern and Gia Mia, and shopping at My Special Toy Store and Fair Game. The downtown is quite festive this time of year with icicle lighting on the Metra station, a large tree, and a few massive snowflakes dotting the scenery.
Always a bustling, festive destination, take a walk around downtown La Grange and enjoy the decorations and historic homes, and then shop at one of the many boutique stores or enjoy a meal. Two favorites in our house are Palmer Place and Luccas Pizzeria and Ristorante. Their light display is quite impressive. The shops and trees down La Grange road are covered in white lights, and the display at village hall is excellent. Don’t miss the fountain and gigantic gift box.
Want a delicious seasonal treat to enjoy while looking at holiday light displays? Head over to Oberweis in downtown Western Springs. They also have a nice display of trees at the village green, and each tree is sponsored by a local organization.
Get some holiday shopping in at Vintage Charm while enjoying the atmosphere in downtown Hinsdale. They have a simple, classic, and tasteful display of mostly white lights in Burlington Park across the street from the village hall.
The decorations in downtown Clarendon Hills make for a very festive walk. Lights and garland wrap the light posts and have a wreath and candles on top. Strands of light connect the posts, and you will find a few trees scattered around. Brama La Pizza is a great pizza place to enjoy some dinner while taking in the holiday displays. And, if you’re gluten free, my wife highly recommends theirs. She said it is, quote, “very tasty.”
The tree-lined Village Center at Burr Ridge is decked out in classic white with lights wrapping the trunk and hanging from the branches. They have large, colorful gift boxes in the courtyard and a sparkling frame for photo ops. The Village Center has many restaurant options for celebrating this holiday season. Cooper’s Hawk, Capri, and Stix & Stones are favorites in our house.
Downtown Lemont offers up my personal favorite display of lights and decorations. They have a beautiful courtyard and stunning light displays throughout the downtown. Take in the lights and enjoy Irish fare at Hughie McClafferty’s, or head over to Digs on Canal and enjoy your meal in one of their heated igloos.
