Craft coffee is one of my favorite things in the world. But like politics and religion, it can be polarizing. To you die-hard Dunkin’ loyalists, a tip of the cap to you. I get it. Craft coffee’s expensive. You can get the same caffeine content from Dunkin’ at a quarter of the price. So why do I love craft coffee? For the same reason I prefer indie music to pop, local pizzerias to national franchises, and my New Balance 1080’s to whatever shoes they have on sale at the department store. I love things are unnecessarily good. Steve Jobs once said, “When you’re a carpenter making a beautiful chest of drawers, you’re not going to use a piece of plywood on the back, even though it faces the wall and nobody will ever see it. You’ll know it’s there, so you’re going to use a beautiful piece of wood on the back. For you to sleep well at night, the aesthetic, the quality, has to be carried all the way through.” Craft coffee is like that table made out of gorgeous mahogany all the way around, even that back part nobody sees. It’d be easy to use plywood. Lord knows it would be cheaper. But I’m a plywood-free real estate brokerage. My goal is to provide service, education, and results that are better than they need to be. I could get the job done with a quarter of the effort, but that’s not my style. You might object, “That’s a waste. Serve me up some Dunkin’ Realty.” And if that’s what you want, it’s not hard to find. But as far as I’m concerned, it’s never a waste to go above and beyond for my clients. I’m not going to market your listing on the cheap. I’m not going to show you three homes and then pressure you into buying one of them. It may take more time, more money, and more effort, but it’s worth it. The New Testament tells us about a time when Judas was upset because a woman poured expensive perfume on Jesus. He said, “Why this waste? This could have been sold for a lot of money and given to the poor.” But Jesus said what the woman did for Him was beautiful. Beauty and excellence do not care about cost or efficiency. Craft coffee level service may not be the most practical thing in the world, but buying or selling a home is too significant an investment to settle for anything less.
