Chicagoland’s Property Tax Rankings: Cook County Not in the Top Spot

Despite Cook County’s well-earned reputation for high property taxes, six other counties in the greater Chicagoland area actually have higher property tax rates. This ranking may surprise many residents who assume Cook County is at the top of the list. Here’s a ranking from highest to lowest property tax rates:

  1. Kendall County: With a property tax rate of about 3.00%, Kendall County has the highest rates in the Chicagoland area, resulting in median property tax payments of around $6,450 per year.
  2. Winnebago County: This county also has a property tax rate of approximately 3.00%, with a median annual payment of about $3,480, though lower property values can somewhat offset this high rate.
  3. McHenry County: The property tax rate here is around 2.89%, leading to median payments of about $6,148 annually.
  4. Lake County: Property tax rates in Lake County average around 2.83%, making it one of the more expensive counties in terms of property taxes.
  5. DuPage County: DuPage County’s property tax rate is approximately 2.33%, which, combined with high property values, results in substantial annual tax bills.
  6. Will County: The property tax rate in Will County is around 2.17%, still resulting in significant tax payments due to high property values.
  7. Cook County: Despite its reputation, Cook County has a property tax rate of about 2.12%, with a median property tax payment of $4,815 annually.

These rates illustrate the significant impact property taxes can have on the cost of homeownership across the Chicagoland area. For homeowners and potential buyers, understanding these differences is crucial for making informed decisions.
